In this life, you live a life of love while you're alive or you will leave a legacy of love. Either way, it's all about l💙ve. -Edna J White So many times in our lives we get consumed with one thought or one objective that brings us and those around us no happiness. All because we were not validated in our childhood and we act out emotionally in response to others. We need to stop and realize that our lives have gone cold and that we offer nothing to those around us.  Do you have a love interest?  Do you enjoy days with your siblings?  Do you have healthy friendships?  Does your phone ring just from a friend reaching out to say hi? All these questions and more should be asked of yourself and take a few minutes to look into. Our lives are not always one thing or one-sided. Just work or just play. It's a balance that you are an addition to those titles or roles you play like daughter, son, sister, mother, wife, husband, worker, En...

A Lesson in Cheating

Image
An Intimate Lesson A client asked me recently to write about cheating in romantic relationships. This is a touchy subject because it stings so much. I’ve experienced the pain of cheating first hand, and I can tell you I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. All a relationship is after all is two people learning how to trust one another. Trust is the foundation of everything else. Without trust, there isn’t a relationship. When cheating happens, that trust is shattered. And it’s very hard to get it back (not impossible). There are different perspectives on cheating. For me, it’s a deal breaker. For my therapist, she has seen many a couple work through it and come back even stronger. There’s no right or wrong way to look at it, but there is a deeper lesson inside the painful act of cheating that I’d like to speak to. I’ve worked with many clients who have been cheated on in different ways: sexually and emotionally. Sexual cheating is when you have sex outside the relations...

Have a Creative Outlet

Do you have a creative outlet in your life?  You may be lucky to work in a creative field that stimulates your mind of creativity but there are some who find it a lot harder to get that innate creativity.    When I was young, I assumed that creativity was all about your ability to: paint draw sculpt dance create music But it is about a those and a whole lot more. And that’s why we all need a creative outlet — it's not to simply create things — but to allow ourselves to fully express our true selves. We allow our own inner light to shine through in our creations. When was the last time you sat down and colored?  Why don’t we do that kind of thing anymore? I finally realized that the only thing that allows my mind to completely "go quiet" is writing. Yet it still has taken me years to recognize that I could actually cultivate this habit. I grew up with voices in my head that said creative activities were for kids and not a productive...

Self-kindness is self-care

I hope you're having a good holiday. I'm spending mine so far on just relaxing and decompressing with my family after a very full 2016. Now, the newsletter today is about one area that I've written a lot about in the past four years and that is still very close to my heart. It is what I like to call self-kindness. It's close to my heart because it has meant so much to me. By being kinder towards myself, I have become happier, more effective and motivated and it has helped me to become kinder and better in my relationships with other people too. But it's also close to my heart because almost every week I read in the newspapers and in my inbox how people's self-worth seems to get worse. If you  do not feel so good about yourself , if you think that your self-esteem is a bit low or you beat yourself up regularly when making a mistake then there are things you can do. There are habits you can develop within yourself to become more self-rel...

Learn to Let Go

“Everything I’ve ever let go of has claw marks on it.” —David Foster Wallace The new moon was beautiful, but it lasted only so long. Once it was over, it was over. In time, perfection is tainted by life’s hurried blemishes, to die a thousand deaths.  We often look at the things we enjoy—relationships, experiences, possessions—and we want to hold on to them forever. We expect that these things will continue to add the same value to our lives, day in and day out. However, they don't and we tend to hang on to that past value for dear life, like a wild animal to its season's first food.   And letting go of distractions or huge mental burdens (that can also become physical as stress and worries pile up), can be just that type of feat. Today, I hope I can share some techniques for letting go of emotional suffering. The best way to get rid of painful and negative emotions is to let them go. Learning to let go of the emotions is extremely difficult. Letting go ...
